Paralegal | Unaccompanied Children's Program | Detained Services
Our organization is seeking a compassionate and motivated individual to join our team as a paralegal with a focus on the administration of services for detained children. In this position, you will work closely with Asylum Clinic KC attorneys and staff to help provide excellent legal services to detained children in removal proceedings who are seeking legal status in the United States. While this is a collaborative team environment, the Paralegal in this position will primarily involve administrative tasks related to managing and coordinating legal services for detained children. While prior immigration or experience working with detained children is not required, we are looking for someone who is eager to learn and grow within the role.

We will provide training for the various legal aspects of the job to help the person build their knowledge and skill level. Key Responsibilities
(Training Provided)

Preparing for and conducting weekly Know Your Rights presentations and legal screenings for children detained in a shelter in Topeka, Kansas;

Handle administrative tasks such as data entry, mailing duties, invoicing, managing spreadsheets, etc.;

Provide support to the team by communicating with caseworkers, partners, and service providers;

Screening incoming calls and messages from potential clinic clients;

Coordinating case flow, client communications, and maintaining all deadlines for current clients;

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all detained children and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications

Fluent in both Spanish and English (conversational Spanish at minimum)

Passionate about immigration-related advocacy and trauma-informed advocacy with children

Highly organized with excellent multitasking abilities, attention to detail, and ability to manage overlapping deadlines and priorities

Capable of learning quickly, meeting quick deadlines under pressure, and handling confidential information discreetly

Proficient in basic word processing, data entry, and computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and Adobe;

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team

Flexible, punctual, and responsible

Possess a valid driver’s license/insurance and willing to travel to Topeka, Kansas once a week

Able to pass federal and state background checks.

Prior experience with immigration law or work with unaccompanied children not required – training provided for all tasks.
Hours, Compensation, & Benefits
This is an in-person position located at our office in Kansas City, Missouri. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with one travel day required every Thursday for our trip to Topeka to provide Know Your Rights presentations to immigrant youth.

The compensation for this position is negotiable (starting at $22-$25/hr) and will be based on the candidate's experience. We offer a comprehensive compensation package for full-time employees, which includes:
